THEAL
NAME : Theal
STARRING : Prabhu Deva, Samyutha, Easwari, yogibabu
DIRECTOR : Harikumar
IMDB : 4.9/10
YEAR : 2022
Harikumar sets the narrative in the Koyambedu market, where Paulraj (Shathru), a loan shark, loans money to shops at a high interest rate. Those who fail to repay the money are subjected to particular punishment by Dorai, his debt collector (Prabhudeva). Durai, who grew up as an orphan, has no qualms about physically beating Paulraj's helpless victims. One of the first things that strikes you in Theal is how calm it is for a picture that deals with violence.
The sequences are slow, there is a lot of stillness, which allows the scenes to breathe, and the shabby-chic visual tone, with dark lighting (by Vignesh Vasu), is stunning at the same time. Theal is a surprisingly excellent drama that is well-made and with compelling performances. Yes, the narrative, which is basically a slavish translation of the Korean film, is responsible for most of the picture's emotional punch, but the filmmaking is also adequate.
Harikumar avoids extraneous commercial aspects, with the exception of a duet in the second half between Durai and Thilaka (Samyuktha Hegde), which is tonally off from the rest of the film (the romance component is one of the film's few letdowns). This concentration aids in keeping us engrossed. As the quiet but angry Durai, Prabhudeva is stunning, while Eswari Rao is excellent as the mother.
It's then that you realise how brilliantly Harikumar (a well-known choreographer and performer) has absorbed the spirit of the film's inspiration - Korean maestro Kim Ki-Pieta duk's - as a newbie filmmaker (2012). In the title card, the filmmaker recognises the impact of the Korean film, including a thank you message to Kim Ki-duk, who is given a narrative credit.
